NLC offers to mediate between FG, Boko Haram

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Thursday, has offered to intercede between the government and members of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram. The acting president of the congress, Promise

Adewusi, while speaking on behalf of the congress said that, the recent attacks by the sect could not break up or factionalise the country, saying that Nigeria would emerge stronger at the end of it.
According to the Acting President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, the congress has offered to mediate between the government and the members of the sect to bring a lasting solution and restore peace.
"We at the congress wish to re-affirm our faith in an indivisible Nigeria where all can co-exist. We, therefore, further reiterate our readiness to meditate in bringing this needless fury to an end," Adewusi said in a statement issued by the NLC on Thursday.

The congress, however, called on Nigerians in all part of the country not to resort to reprisal attack over the killing of people in Kano Motor Park bombing on Monday.

In the statement, he condemned what he termed "unjustifiable act of horror," perpetrated in Kano on Monday by yet-to-be identified bombers, which left scores of passengers and other users of the motor park dead.

He describe it as a cowardly and shameful act, incapable of advancing any cause except evil, the NLC acting president said the congress believed no cause was worth killing innocent Nigerians for.
"If motor parks, where ordinary people use or eke out their daily living are no longer safe, where else could be safe? Yet, we urge the people of Nigeria and citizens of other nations domiciled in Nigeria not to be intimidated or beaten," the statement added.

The congress also called on the law enforcement agents to rise to the challenge of combating terror and to focus on protecting the vulnerable people.

"We wish to invite the government to, as a matter of urgency, do all that is necessary and explore all legitimate avenues to bring to an end this insurgency. We dare say this includes addressing the remote and immediate causes of this phenomenon, re- equipping our intelligence and security forces to be proactive and also be able to cope with new challenges.

"The choice of target in the latest barbaric act is intended to raise primordial sentiments, but we should see it for what it is, a desperate act by desperate people to weaken the bonds that hold us together. We will overcome them if we refuse to fall for their ploy, by not carrying out reprisals," added the statement.
